• No Timed Entry Permits to Visit the Rocky Mountain National Park
The Rocky Mountain National Park has now implemented the Timed Entry Permit Reservation System to limit the number of people in the National Park during the peak season. May marks the start of the “tourist season” in Estes Park, and with it, campgrounds and RV parks begin opening up for camping. Just be sure to check the weather frequently as random snowstorms are known to happen in May.
• Animals begin having their babies
One of our favorite parts of Spring is seeing the wildlife have their babies! Bobcats & coyotes begin giving birth in early Spring and the elk & moose calving season begins in late May through June.
✖ Downsides of visiting Estes Park, Colorado in the Spring
While many people think Spring means sunny weather and flowers blooming, Springtime in the Rockies is actually very unpredictable with warm days mixed in with random snowstorms. Springtime is considered to be the “muddy season” with March and April being some of the snowiest months in Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park.
• Weather More Unpredictable
The weather in the Spring is very unpredictable so it can be hard to prepare for. We can get anything from beautiful warm sunny days, to snowstorms with wind up to 30mph the very next day.
• Muddy Season
As the snow begins to melt, trails at lower elevations will be covered in mud. Be sure to bring waterproof shoes with gaiters to keep your feet dry.
• Less Activities to Do
With the snow not fully melted, and the weather being unpredictable, some popular activities and areas are still closed for the season. Trail Ridge Road, Old Fall River Road, and the Estes Park Aerial Tramway remain closed in Spring. The snow is also beginning to melt for winter activities like sledding and skiing.

Even with perfect Summer weather, there’s still a few downsides to visiting Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park in the Summertime.
• Peak Tourist Season
The Summer is the beginning of the “peak tourist season” in both Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park. Many days have heavy foot and vehicle traffic within the downtown area of Estes Park and in the entirety of the Rocky Mountain National Park. This can make parking more difficult to find, wait times to get into the National Park are much longer, and trails can feel more like a theme park with the amount of visitors. These downsides can be even worse on the weekends.
• Timed Entry Permit System Begins in Rocky Mountain National Park
With more than 4 million visitors each year, the Rocky Mountain National Park has now implemented the Timed Entry Permit Reservation System to limit the number of people in the National Park during the peak season. If you’re visiting the National Park in the Summertime, you will likely need to reserve a timeslot to enter the Park beforehand. If you do not have a timed entry reservation in addition to your entrance pass, you may not be able to get into the Park.
