CROWDS / POPULARITY IN NOVEMBER
November marks the beginning of the shoulder, or off-season, in Estes Park, with the town seeing much quieter days compared to the bustling summer months. Visitor numbers drop to less than 150,000, offering a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. While it’s generally quiet, weekends and holidays can still draw in crowds, especially if the weather is nice, but overall, you’ll find more solitude on the streets and trails.
With fewer visitors, Rocky Mountain National Park is a winter wonderland waiting to be explored. Timed Entry Reservations are no longer required, and you’ll have a lot more freedom to enjoy the park’s beauty without the usual congestion. Popular trails and overlooks are much quieter, but remember to check trail conditions as some may be snow-packed or icy.

TRANSPORTATION / HOW TO GET AROUND IN NOVEMBER
In November, transportation options become even more limited. Free shuttles in both Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park are not operating, and services like Uber and Lyft are rare. The Bustang service from Denver also halts for the season.
For more freedom, your best bet is to bring your own vehicle or utilize local ride services like Explore Estes, to get around the area. Explore Estes is a licensed transportation business that offers rides within Estes Park, ride services down the mountain (as far as Boulder), and rides to/from trailheads in Rocky Mountain National Park. Click here to request a ride with Explore Estes. Rental options are also very limited in town and include Up Top Automotive (limited vehicles) and Backbone Jeep Rentals (specializing in 4×4 rentals). The Turo App is another rental choice.
Important Note: Keep in mind that November weather can be unpredictable, with snowstorms a possibility. Having a vehicle with AWD or 4WD is strongly recommended, and winter or snow tires are ideal. If you only have a 2WD vehicle, tire chains can be used as a backup. Roads in town and within the National Park are generally well-maintained and plowed, but icy conditions can still make driving challenging, so make sure you’re comfortable with winter driving before setting out.

WEATHER IN NOVEMBER
November in Estes Park is a transitionary month between fall and winter. While snowfall in town is usually light and melts off quickly, higher elevations in Rocky Mountain National Park begin to see more consistent snow that sticks through the season. This time of year is perfect for witnessing the early signs of winter while still enjoying mild conditions in town.
Daytime highs in Estes Park average around 42°F (5.5°C), while nighttime lows can dip to 22°F (-5.5°C), with occasional drops below 0°F (-18°C) into the negatives. If you’re heading to higher elevations in Rocky Mountain National Park, be prepared for even colder conditions as it cools about 3 – 5 degrees for every 1000ft (305m) of elevation that you gain, not including the added chill of the wind that is funneled through the mountains. Though snowstorms are possible, Estes Park typically sees flurries or light snowfall accumulation that melts within a day or two, while the mountains often hold onto their snow cover. It’s not uncommon for Estes Park to experience sunshine while the National Park sees snowfall, or vice versa. The dry and windy conditions persist, with average winds around 17 mph (27 km/h), adding a chill to the air.
Sunrises occur around 7:00 AM, and the sun sets by 5:00 PM after the end of Daylight Savings, making daylight hours shorter. The landscape shifts to winter’s muted tones, with fallen leaves and dormant grass signaling the change of seasons.
WHAT TO WEAR / PACK IN NOVEMBER
As winter takes hold, layering is key when visiting Estes Park in November. Be sure to pack a moisture wicking base layer, add a cozy fleece, and top it off with a waterproof or resistant outer layer. Be sure to wear wool socks and some waterproof boots to keep your feet dry.
If you plan to hike, consider packing micro spikes to navigate icy trails, leg gaiters to keep snow out of your boots, and snowshoes for deeper snow. Ski goggles and a neck gaiter can help protect your face from the harsh wind, especially at higher elevations. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat—UV rays can still be strong at altitude, even in the winter.
