CROWDS / POPULARITY IN OCTOBER
October in Estes Park sees a noticeable decrease in visitors as the peak season comes to an end, with fewer than 350,000 people compared to the bustling summer months. The town is quieter towards the end of the month, offering a more relaxed atmosphere for those who prefer a peaceful retreat.
With the reduction in crowds, you’ll experience shorter wait times entering Rocky Mountain National Park. Although on days with beautiful weather, trails can still become overly crowded, so consider opting for less popular trails not located on the Bear Lake Road Corridor for more solitude. Timed Entry Reservations are required through mid-October, but you’ll find less congestion on the roads and trails once the reservation system ends. This is the perfect time to explore the park’s natural beauty without the summer crowds.

TRANSPORTATION / HOW TO GET AROUND IN OCTOBER
As October progresses, transportation options in Estes Park become more limited. Free shuttles in Estes Park (The Peak) operate on a reduced schedule and stop running by the end of the month. The shuttles within Rocky Mountain National Park also follow this pattern, ending their service at the close of October. The Bustang bus service from Denver is no longer available for the season, and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are almost non-existent in the area.
For more freedom, your best bet is to bring your own vehicle or utilize local ride services like Explore Estes, to get around the area. Explore Estes is a licensed transportation business that offers rides within Estes Park, ride services down the mountain (as far as Boulder), and rides to/from trailheads in Rocky Mountain National Park. Click here to request a ride with Explore Estes. Rental options are also very limited in town and include Up Top Automotive (limited vehicles) and Backbone Jeep Rentals (specializing in 4×4 rentals). The Turo App is another rental choice.
Important Note: October’s weather can be unpredictable, with the possibility of snowstorms toward the end of the month. An AWD or 4WD vehicle is recommended, and winter or snow tires are ideal. If you only have a 2WD vehicle, tire chains are a good backup. Ensure you’re comfortable with icy driving skills before heading into the mountains if you’re trekking into higher elevations.

WEATHER IN OCTOBER
October in Estes Park ushers in cooler temperatures, with average highs around 56°F (13°C) and lows dipping to 31°F (-0.5°C). Most days see temperatures dropping below freezing, especially at night with a light frost dusting the landscape in the morning. While the afternoons can still be pleasant, the increasing winds, averaging 15 mph (24 km/h), bring a noticeable chill, especially at higher elevations. And if you’re heading to higher elevations in Rocky Mountain National Park, be prepared for colder weather as it cools about 3 – 5 degrees for every 1000ft (305m) in elevation that you gain.
Wildfire danger remains a concern in October due to the dry conditions and minimal moisture. The vibrant aspen leaves, which peaked in September, begin to fall, and the landscape transitions to the muted tones of late autumn. Sunrises occur around 7:10 AM, with the sun setting by approximately 6:20 PM, shortening the daylight hours. Although snowstorms are possible towards the end of the month, the snow often melts quickly.

WHAT TO WEAR / PACK IN OCTOBER
Layering is essential when visiting Estes Park in October, as temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day, especially if you’re hitting the trails at higher elevations. Be sure to pack a moisture wicking base layer, add a cozy fleece, and top it off with a waterproof or resistant outer layer. Be sure to wear wool socks and some waterproof boots to keep your feet dry. And lastly, don’t forget sunscreen and hats, as the higher elevation brings you closer to the sun with more intense UV rays.
